Ok John (Ancient Hebrew Poetry) I take the challenge. Here are the five books that have helped me and challenged my understanding of the Bible.
- Jesus and the Victory of God
by N.T. Wright. What can I say about this book? It forever changed my life and perception about the New Testament, Jesus and Judaism, and salvation history.
- The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Helped me to understand the meaning of the cross, grace of Christ and what it means to follow Jesus the Nazareth.
- Historical Jesus: A Comprehensive Guide by Gerd Theissen and Annette Merz. This book first introduced me to past and most recent scholarship on the Historical Jesus and the Gospels. It is exhaustive in scope.
- A Theology of the New Testament by George Eldon Ladd. This is sweet biblical theology. The classic evangelical text about NT theology.
- Desiring God by John Piper. I first read this book sometime back in college (2000). It simply revolutionized my world, my understanding of God and my relationship with God. Foremost this book has helped me to understand what Jonathan Edwards called a “God-entranced worldview” of all things.
